Dr. Daniel Bauer is a professor and the Hickman-Larson Chair in Actuarial Science at the Wisconsin School of Business. He currently serves as the chairman of the Department of Risk and Insurance at the School of Business. He is also one of the architects of the UW Master’s in Business Analytics, for which he currently serves as the faculty director.
Daniel grew up in Germany and holds dual American and German citizenship. He received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from Ulm University. He also holds a Master’s in Statistics from San Diego State University, where he studied as a Fulbright scholar. Daniel was the Bob Batten Chair of Actuarial Science at Georgia State University and the Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company Endowed Chair in Actuarial Science and Risk Management at the University of Alabama before joining UW in 2018. He is a board member of the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) and a visiting scholar of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank. He serves on the editorial boards for several academic publications in actuarial science and risk management, including the North-American Actuarial Journal, the Journal of Risk and Insurance, and the Springer Actuarial book series.
Daniel’s published work includes articles on pricing and valuation in life and non-life insurance, economic capital modeling, valuation of financial derivatives, estimation of life expectancy, and valuation of life settlements, among other subjects. He has published his research in leading journals in statistics, economics, finance, and management. Daniel has also consulted or worked as an expert for several companies and agencies. He teaches classes in actuarial science, data science, quantitative finance, and quantitative risk management.
